Assistant Controller

Lucas Group has been engaged by a successful, Private-Equity owned Retail firm to search for an Assistant Controller.

The Assistant Controller will be a crucial part of the accounting team reporting to the Corporate Controller and will be responsible for all general accounting functions. Primary responsibilities include balance sheet reconciliations, technical accounting guidance, interpretation and supporting of all accounting and treasury operations including: general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, treasury and cash management, risk management functions.  Additionally, the Assistant Controller will work closely with operations teams to drive process and systems improvements and develop, maintain, and administer policies and procedures. 

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Assist in month end close process and preparation and review of financial statements in compliance with GAAP and other requirements.  

  • Post month end journal entries and reconcile accounts for the monthly and annual closing.  

  • Support the formulation and implementation of internal control systems within the organization. 

  • Oversee and support accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll, identify discrepancies, and reconcile accounts. 

  • Ensure ASC 606 and 842 compliance. Stay up to date with any changes to accounting standards and ensure compliance.  

  • Perform cash projections to effectively manage cash balances. 

  • Support the timely completion of year end audit.  

  • Implement, document, and maintain adequate and effective internal controls. 

  • Implement, document, and maintain adequate and effective processes to improve the close and reporting cycles to ensure timely and accurate reporting. 

  • Help implement new accounting software, identify areas for improvements, document current processes and identify opportunities for improvement.  

  • Integrate acquired stores’ accounting and treasury functions. 

  • Supervise a team of 5 professionals.  

 

Qualifications and Experience: 

  • CPA and Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required

  • 7+ years’ experience in the accounting. 

  • 3+ years of experience for a multi-unit service provider preferred. 

  • 3+ years of experience for a franchisor or private equity owned company preferred.  

  • Big Four or national accounting firm audit experience is preferred but not required. 

Skills: 

  • Possess exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including ability to articulate recommendations in a concise and timely manner. 

  • Ability to handle payroll including the mental conflicts that are associated with this responsibility. 

  • Conscientious about timeliness of assignments and quality of work product 

  • Proven track record/experience with project-oriented initiatives in order to improve existing business processes. 

  • Strong GAAP and financial reporting technical skills 

  • Change Leadership – initiates change to ensure continued business success 

  • Experience with implementing a large ERP system, preferred.
